Every now and then an event punches far above its weight, and EFC 63 was one of these. A record ten performance bonuses were handed out to athletes that put it all on the line, and thrilled the Mother City crowd.

The USA’s Dave Mazany headlined the event against Zimbabwe’s Themba Gorimbo. It was a well-timed left hand that crumpled Gorimbo in the second, bringing Mazany a knock out victory after a technical, clinch dominated first round.

Brazil’s Jose Da Rocha returned to the Hexagon after his first round loss to welterweight (and middleweight) champion Dricus Du Plessis, and made good on his vow to show a different side to his skills. A lazer guided straight right dropped South Africa’s Cameron Pritchard early in the first, causing referee Bobby Karagiannidis to step in and stop the fight. The stoppage was controversial as Pritchard was on his feet and protesting immediately.

‘The Lion’ Dino Bagattin fought a technical striking battle with the DRC’s Bruno Mukulu, and managed to out point ‘The Major’ over three rounds. The Lion is back in the win column, and has all but booked a bout with England’s Joe Cummins in November.

Former light heavyweight champion Gideon Drotschie made his long awaited return against Bloemfontein’s Warren Allison, and was finished inside of one round. Allison controlled the fight early, taking it to ground and finishing ‘The Juggernaut’ by TKO due to strikes.

Conrad Seabi opened the main card against shock replacement Wayde Sage, who took the fight on just 24 hours’ notice, after Shaun De Lange had to withdraw due to illness. Sage went all out, landing heavy kicks and punches against Seabi in a brutal first round. Early in the second the aggression of Seabi proved too much however, and Sage succumbed to a ruthless barrage of ground and pound.

While the main card delivered intense MMA action, it was the prelim card that ignited the stadium. Shane Meier, Quaid Openshaw, Trezegeut Kanyinda, Francois Cundari, Sizwe Mnikathi and Deon Cundari were all awarded performance bonues, and fight of the night went to Nerik Simoes versus Faeez Jacobs. Conrad Seabi and Wayde Sage also earned performance bonuses.

The official EFC 63 results were:

Quaid Openshaw defeated Shane Meier via TKO (punches) 1:20 in round 1.
